Front Door Might

She had just moved into a new build. Fresh paint. Clean lines. Everything untouched.

She called us to re-key the locks so the construction crew wouldn’t have access.

When we arrived, we saw what we see in nearly every new build: builder-grade hardware installed with short factory screws.

It looked solid.

But looks can be deceiving.

Most production homes are outfitted with cost-effective locks purchased in bulk. They turn. They click. They pass inspection. But they’re not chosen for maximum security.

And often, the bigger issue isn’t even the lock itself.

It’s the screws.

Factory strike plate screws are usually under an inch long. That means they anchor into trim, not into the wall stud behind it. When forced entry happens, the deadbolt often stays intact — but the doorframe splits.

The solution doesn’t have to be dramatic.

Replacing those short screws with 3-inch screws anchored into the stud can dramatically strengthen the door. Upgrading the lock adds another layer of protection.

New is wonderful.

But secure is intentional.

If you’ve recently moved into a new build, it’s worth taking a closer look at what’s actually protecting your entry points.
